It can be a very difficult decision to put a loved one in a home. There are many reasons to and against putting a relative in a nursing home and people often struggle with their own conscious of whether or not it is the right choice to make.

Often or not there is not a choice though and the person must go into care to not only help themselves but those around them. Looking after a family member full-time can put a huge strain on the family dynamics, your own health as well finances. People will not judge you for doing what is best for the next of kin as well as family relationships.

But how do you choose the right nursing home? Ultimately it needs to make you feel at home. A home should feel like a home so it is important that it is inviting, has a homely feel with fresh flowers as well as great-smelling grub. Your loved-one is going to be in the home seven days a week so they need to feel at ease with the environment, the staff and not feel like a stranger.

The level of support is vital as well as the facilities. Is there a nice garden you can sit in and enjoy a spot of gardening and do they offer activities or social outings to the park, cinema or bingo? Is nursing care 24 hours a day? Is support available for specific disability needs and is there appropriate equipment like handrails on the bath and adjustable armchairs? Are friends and relatives allowed to visit at any time?

These are the kind of questions which you need to ask but the best advice is to go off your gut instant. As soon as you walk in does it feel warm and friendly? Are all the staff walking round with a smile on their face and are they open-hearted offering you a brew?

Further considerations which need to be taken into account are if you have any religious or cultural needs. If you are a practicing Christian, is a staff member available to take you to church every Sunday? Some care homes do not allow you to openly practice a religion such as read from the Bible in case it offends other residents so make sure you enquire.

It is a hard decision to put someone into a home but make sure it is not a verdict that is taken lightly. Take your time when looking around the local area and remember the pointers mentioned above.

A career as a nurse is very rewarding, but it can also be extremely challenging. Your working days and times are very variable and you never know when the next emergency is going to walk, crawl or roll in through the hospital door. It’s definitely not a career for everyone. Hundreds of students drop out of nursing school every year, and others just decide the job’s not for them. But for those who make it, nursing can be a great opportunity to help people and enjoy a personally fulfilling career.

A lot of people regard nursing as a tough job with horrible working hours, but it can actually be just the opposite. Especially for those who have the skills to work as an agency nurse – you can avoid “getting into a rut” and doing the same thing every day. Agency nurses also have the ability to pick and choose which jobs they take, and if one will interfere with an important family event or they are feeling under the weather, they can simply decline the job. When their diary is clear or a job becomes available that they really want, then they can agree to work.

Agency nurses sometimes work in private residences rather than hospitals or nursing homes. As a private nurse you meet new people all the time, and many nurses report that they stay in close contact with their “favorite” clients, keeping tabs on their health and well being. Clients often reciprocate and it’s not at all uncommon for a client to request a specific nurse for a day, a week, or longer.

One thing that is necessary if you choose to work as an agency nurse is efficient paperwork. Since you’re working for an agency rather than a hospital or nursing home, you are technically a contractor. You are responsible for invoicing, making tax payments, setting up a work pension for yourself and determining your holiday time. Since most nurses enjoy the nursing but not the paperwork, many of them are turning to Umbrella companies to furnish those services.

An Umbrella Company takes care of the administrative work for self-employed contractors of many kinds, including nurses. From ensuring that the correct national insurance contributions are made on time, to dealing with tax forms and calculations for you, an Umbrella Company can allow a nurse to focus on the patients and treatments, rather than expenses forms, mileage vouchers and time consuming calculations.

With the new Agency Workers Regulations looming, agency nurses and other contractor-type employees must either determine how the new legislation affects them and prepare all necessary reports and paperwork, or find someone to help them with it. That “someone”, very often, is an Umbrella Company. The company will have someone on staff dealing with such things as identifying new procedures and regulations contained in the legislation. If this doesn’t sound like something you’d like to spend your time on, using a good Umbrella Company is probably a very good idea for you.

A new study has revealed that the average level of personal debt for a woman retiring now stands at £7,350, while retired men face £8,180 of personal debt on average.

Retirement income specialist MGM Advantage has published the debt situation that British people retiring these days are suffering.

Overall figures revealed that retired Brits in the UK face up to £96.41 billion of personal debt. Specifically, data shows that 2.5 million British people retiree with a personal debt between £1 and £5,000, while 1.094 million face a debt standing between £5,001 and £25,000. However, the great majority of British retirees (6.7 million) start their retirement with no debts to pay off.

Further data shows that Wales, the South West of England and London are the British regions where retired people face a higher amount of personal debt, with this standing at £13,857, £11,758 and £11,255 respectively. Brits with the lowest amount of debt live in the North East (£6,511), Eastern (£4,759) and East Midlands (£4,164).

This news makes clear how vulnerable the financial status of British people retiring these days is. Many fail to plan effectively for elderly support. On top of debt, today’s retirees will have to face a higher tax rate from next April 2013. This is the date when the government will officially remove the current tax allowance that British retirees aged over 65 enjoy of right now.

Alarming figures

“These figures are alarming. As the cost of living continues to put pressure on household finances, many retired people will feel under growing pressure to take on debt to fund everyday living,” said Aston Goodey, Director at MGM Advantage.

He also gave some advice to people looking to put their debt under control: “It is vital that people shop around for the best annuity rate to maximize the income they receive. The difference between the best and worst rates can be as much as 50%.” 50% is a lot of money to potentially lose, isn’t it? It could be the difference between being able to afford a stairlift for the elderly and not in the years to come.

If you thought that the only place where you could find a nurse is at a hospital, you’d be mistaken. Nurses can work in a variety of different health care facilities. Right now there is a big demand for nurses to work both in and out of hospitals.

The need for more nurses is due to numerous factors. Due to technological advances we are finding that nurses can treat a wider variety of medical problems. There is also an increased emphasis on the need for more preventative care services. When you couple this with the fact that people are living longer, thus increasing the number of older people, you can see why there is a need for more nurses.

People are increasingly needing nursing care in locations other than hospitals. Let me go through a list of some of the most common settings where you’d find a registered nurse.

Hospitals

The most common place to find a registered nurse is at a hospital. Most of the nurses at the hospital are employed full or part time and are assigned to one area. These areas include ICU, ER or the pediatrics unit to name a few. The number of nurses in hospitals is not expected to rise much, as more procedures are being done at locations other than hospitals and patients are being discharged earlier as well.

Medical Centers

Nurses at medical centers such as clinics or a physicians office care for patients who undergo sophisticated procedures that were once only done in hospitals. The need for nurses at these locations will increase as more surgeries and procedures can be performed there. Nurses at these outpatient facilities do a variety of things such as administering medications and preparing patients for surgery.

Nursing Homes

At nursing homes, you will find nurses caring for patients with a wide variety of conditions. Nurses can work helping long term rehabilitation patients recover from a stroke or a head injury. They can also work with patients suffering from Alzheimer’s. RN’s at nursing homes also perform administrative tasks here as well as supervisory tasks.

Home Health

Home health nurses care for patients in the patients own home periodically. Home health nurses care for people who are recovering from an accident, an illness, childbirth and cancer to name a few. These nurses can also supervise home health aides as well as instruct patients and their families. This field is expected to grow due to technological advances that allows patients to stay at home with supervision.

Public Health

Public health nurses work at facilities such as schools or other agencies such as a retirement community or a clinic. These types of nurses are interested in improving the health of the community they work for. These nursers work with members of the community to educate them on preventing diseases and help arrange health screenings for members of the community.

Schools

You can also find nurses at colleges and universities. Any school that has a nursing program will also need to have nurse educators as well. But you can also find nurses who teach at the hospital itself. These nurse educators provide orientation to current nurses and they can confirm nurse competency too.

Despite inevitable fluctuations in our unpredictable economy, the medical field has consistently seen a growing need for professionals in the nursing industry.

Why Pursue Career Opportunities for Nurses?

Regardless of their chosen area of specialty or practice, nurses pride themselves on the ability to serve people from all walks of life and patients with all sorts of injuries and illnesses. In addition to providing expert medical care to millions of people every day, nurses dedicate substantial amounts of time and energy to the education of individuals in their communities.

As teachers, they commit to further education and spread their knowledge throughout the community of fellow nursing students and other medical professionals, building a sturdy foundation for the future of the field. They keep abreast of new and improved procedures, technology and equipment in order to provide the most complete care possible.

No matter their level of expertise or their particular location, they take an oath to quality care, monitoring and treating patients from the moment they arrive at a medical facility until the moment they are discharged. Nurses consistently provide their many patients with compassionate care in a way that is unparalleled in any other profession.

What Are the Options for Professionals Looking for Career Opportunities for Nurses?

As nurses are an invaluable asset in the medical industry in general, their skills are required in a variety of specialized fields and environments. Some of the most sought after positions in the nursing field are outlined as follows:

Emergency room and operating room nurses

Nurses in the military

Certified nurse midwivesOB/GYN nurses

Pediatric nurses, including those that work within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU

School nurses

Clinical nurse educators

Geriatric nurses, such as those who work in nursing homes

Home healthcare nurses

Oncology nurses

Nurse practitioners

Orthopedic nurses

Maternity nurses

Wound care specialists

Authors and Professors of nursing

When pursuing further education, nursing professionals have the option of obtaining a Master’s degree in their chosen field. These individuals often choose to move on to teaching at a university level, sharing both their theoretical and practical knowledge with others who wish to contribute to this constantly growing field.

The nursing profession is the largest of the various health care occupations. Not only that but the jobs in this field are projected to continue increasing. So it’s no surprise why there is such a vast interest in the nursing profession. Some states currently have a nursing shortage while others are projecting a nursing shortage in the coming years. The reason for this shortage is due to various reasons. Here are a few of them.

The registered nursing profession is an aging workforce. As RN’s age many are entering the retirement phase in their lives. A retirement can be exciting time, as one nurse hangs up her scrubs and a new nursing grad takes over. However what if there isn’t a new grad to take the job? You can see how this presents a problem for the hospital.

There is a decline in enrollments at nursing schools. At a time when the economy is in need of new jobs the nursing field is definitely a place to look. It takes time to complete nursing school however. Add that to the rising costs of tuition and you can see that the nursing profession is certainly no get right quick scheme either.

Another reason that there is a nursing shortage is because there are more patients now than ever that need treatment. Due to technological advances in patient care, people are able to live longer through treatment. This increases the amount of people in need of medical care which in turn requires the need for more nurses.

Now more than ever important attention is being placed on preventative care. This includes patients coming in for yearly check-ups and for other tests. While this is good for the overall health of Americans, it will also put a strain on health facilities as more people will be visiting doctor’s offices and hospitals.

Once the so called baby boomers retire, it will put a strain not only on social security, but on health care as well. Baby boomers are now about 65-70 years old and many of them are in need of medical care. You can expect this trend to continue for the next 20 years.

So in closing, when we have an aging workforce, a decrease in nursing school enrollments, people living longer and baby boomers in need of care, it presents an enormous need for more registered nurses. But look on the bright side, with a nursing shortage comes higher wages for existing nurses and countless new job opportunities for those looking to start a new career.

Are you compassionate, caring and want to make positive impact on other people’s lives? Then a career in nursing will suit you perfectly. However, there are many different kinds of positions within the nursing field, with each requiring a specific amount training. This means you need to be clear from the beginning on which type of nursing suits you best, which can be difficult unless you understand your options. Therefore your first step should be to learn what each nursing career entails:

Registered Nurse:

In order to become a registered nurse, you will need to have more training then other nursing professions. The duties include patient care in one of the many specialty fields; this can be everything from mental health to maternity, or surgical to critical care. These duties can often be expanded to tasks related to nutrition, pharmacology and community health. Once you have completed your training you are able to work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, surgical and ambulatory centers and schools.

Practical/Vocational Nurse:

In order to qualify as a licensed practical or vocational nurse you will require an understanding of anatomy, physiology and common diseases, but once you have this, you will be able to perform a wide-range of hands on duties involving preventative, restorative and therapeutic care. The training involved would equip you with a solid foundation of knowledge about nursing’s legal and ethical responsibilities, as well as how cultural differences impact patient treatment. The employment areas that you will be trained to work in, are hospitals, acute care centers and government or community agencies.

Patient Care Technician:

Patient Care Technicians work with other medical professionals in order to help keep the therapeutic programs running smoothly. They will help patients with bedside care and phlebotomy, as well as preparing them for surgery. The areas that you will be qualified to work in are home medical services, hospitals, rehabilitation centers or private practices.

Nursing Assistants:

Nursing Assistants still work directly with patients and other medical professionals, providing assistance with personal hygiene, eating meals and other daily activities, including monitoring blood pressure, and help with pre and post operative care. On completion of training you will be able to work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practices or patients’ homes.

Now that you have a better understanding on each type of nursing, it should be easier to make a solid decision. There are thousands of registered nursing, practical nursing, patient care technicians and nursing assistant jobs available, so that doesn’t need to be an influencing factor.

There aren’t too many jobs that are as flexible as a nursing career. Due to the nursing shortage you can work practically wherever you want and whenever you want. How’s that for flexibility in a career? A nurse can also work full time, part time and take a break and come back. This is common if a nurse wants to raise a family or go to graduate school. She’ll surely have a job waiting for her when he/she decides to come back again.

But there’s more, nurses can also travel and work for a few months at a new location. If you’re a traveler you could get the best of both worlds by traveling and working as a nurse at the same time. Better yet, the hospital may also cover your housing expenses. Any expenses not covered would be tax deductions. So as you can see the flexibility of a nursing career is quite tremendous.

The areas where a nurse attorney are most needed would be in personal injury and medical malpractice cases. But a nurse attorney doesn’t have to work on her own in getting clients, she can be employed by insurance companies or work as hospital counsels. Other nurse attorneys work as expert witnesses or as consultants in legal cases where medical expertise is required.

Respiratory nursing, also known as pulmonary care nursing, is another specialty that nurses can choose to enter into. The nurses who decide that this is the career path for them will be working with patients who suffer from lung conditions. This can be anything from tuberculosis, asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Nurses will often specialize in the respiratory field because the average respiratory therapist salary is substantial and has shown to increase yearly.

Nurses will also be working with patients who are slow to be weaned off ventilators. It’s common to find respiratory nurses working in the hospital, however these pulmonary care nurses can also work with patients in the home. There they would assist patients with pain management from conditions like emphysema and lung cancer.
